Internet Energy Consumption on the Rise
The internet and its infrastructure is growing. Data centres use about 1% of global electricity demand and rising. The Covid-19 pandemic and advanced adoption of virtual meetings, video chat and streaming further increased demand for electricity.
In a 2021 report published by the International Energy Agency, internet traffic increased over 40% in 2020, due to internet-based technology and its infrastructure. The 1% mentioned earlier is approximately 200 to 250 terawatt-hours — roughly the same amount of energy consumed by Australia (241 TWh) or Mexico (267 TWh) as whole nations, individually. This figure was projected to climb significantly through the 2020s and 2030s as data demand continues to grow.
Most of this energy to support the internet is produced with non-renewable resources. In Manitoba, we are fortunate that the vast majority of our total energy produced is hydroelectric, with a small share from wind and solar, but the world is still very reliant on fossil fuels. Many of the world’s largest data centres are located in the United States or China, dependent on oil, gas and coal.
